Types of Crop Insurance
What Is Multiple Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI)?
MPCI helps cover crop losses and lower yields due to natural disasters. The following are some of the covered disasters:
- Destructive weather (hail, frost, damaging wind)
- Disease
- Drought
- Fire
- Flooding
- Insect damage
Not all crops are covered by this insurance, but there are more than 120 crops covered by MPCI. Policies must be purchased for each growing season by the designated deadline and before the crop is planted. If not purchased when necessary, you may not have coverage for that growing season.
What Is Crop-Hail Insurance?
Crop-hail insurance is for farmers in an area where hail is frequent. This coverage is most common for high-yielding crops as a supplement for MPCI. Hail can completely destroy a portion of crops, so crop-hail insurance oftentimes has low or no deductible. Due to limitations, this policy is less common than MPCI and can be purchased at any point in the growing season.
